Who is the “Veteran’s Day” Holiday Really For?

Who is the “Veteran’s Day” Holiday Really For?

11/2014, JBH

I endeavor to keep my articles on a positive and perhaps uplifting note but sometimes I just need to vent.

I am no hero by any means but I did serve four years in the USN and was honorably discharged at the rank of petty officer second class. So I feel that I can be bold enough to write this article. If this article is offensive or bothersome to the veterans who actually were in combat situations, I offer my sincere apologies.

Now that all of the disclaimers are out of the way, allow me to present the point of this article. Recently the holiday of “Veterans Day” was “celebrated”. By the way this day used to be called "armistice day". But that is a different subject. So being a government holiday, all of the banks, libraries, mail services (USPS), public employment agencies, and most if not all other public offices were closed for the day. Some private businesses were also closed such as local newspaper publishers.

So here I or some of my fellow veterans are in a situation where we have a day off with or without pay-depending on where you work (or not work). While non-veterans are perhaps spending some free time watching parades and listening to speeches of political posturing on TEE VEE. In the meantime, I can not go to the library to do any research on the internet, check out a book, or get a few videos for some entertainment.

Neither can I get a newspaper to check the local want ads. And if I am expecting some important mail, perhaps something to help my financial situation, it will not be arriving today. If I am a disabled veteran and some help with medical bills is due, it will not arrive on veteran’s day.

If I am out of work and diligently seeking for opportunities to improve my situation, I will not get any help from any public “employment agency” as they are closed on veteran’s day for the “celebration”.

If I need some cash or need to pay a bill, or make a cash deposit to prevent a check from bouncing, I will not be able to do that on veteran’s day. The banks are closed for the veteran’s day “celebration”.

So on the modern day “veteran’s day”, there will be speeches, parades, flag waving, and some honor and recognition given to a few real veteran heroes. For most of everyone else though, it is a just a day off and an inconvenience.

That was my veteran’s day holiday. How did you enjoy the celebration?
