Survival/Preperation Resource List

Survival Resource List

This is a work-in-process document. First Release, 11/12/2010, Last Update:11/21/2010
 JBH

I made a decision a few years ago that I felt it would be a good idea to prepare for something that may happen which could cause great discomfort for my family and I if we were not prepared for it. I will not elaborate on this “something” since there are numerous articles that cover the subject and (thankfully) a numerous amount of intelligent folks who feel the same as I do and are taking action.

In trying to prepare for this “thing”/”occurrence” that may or may not happen, a problem arises as to what “stuff” to get and where to get it. Once one decides to get prepared, it requires a great deal of time for research. And it is possible to waste time and money chasing down a wrong “rabbit hole”.

There are numerous and very informative treatises on the survival preparedness subject. Just get on the internet and do a search on “survival gear” and you get all the resources that you can handle. This paper is only my small contribution to the subject. This information is in part, a compilation summary of what I personally decided to purchase to be prepared. I only offer it as a guide and it is not presented as any endorsements. I am happy with what I have acquired thus far and those items are listed here. That is the extent of it.

Again, these entries do not represent any endorsements. They are only what products that I personally decided to use. My criteria of choice was:

  1. Since I inhabit North America, their products have to be available within one of these united states.
  2. Since I do not use “electronic money” or have any bank accounts, they must accept “snail mail” orders and postal money orders for payment.
  3. If it is a “mail order” item, because of criteria #2, I need AT LEAST a contact telephone number. If the only contact resource is email, they are off my list. If they provide a phone number AND a physical mailing address then they are at the head of the class.
  4. Their pricing must not seem to be at a gouging level.
  5. Preferably, I will have done business with them, used their products and do not have any negative comments or blogs on the internet.
  6.  It is a plus if they are well known, well established and their products are American made.

  7. So Here is My List

    1. Bulk food that has a long-term shelf life.
Freeze Dry Guy                        866-404-3663 (FOOD), www.freezedryguy.com
P.O. Box 1476
Grass Valley, Calif. (95945)
They have a wide variety of foodstuffs, Bulk & Single Servings.

      Long Grain (“White”) Rice
This can be purchased in 20# bags in Major Grocery Stores.
This will keep for several years if stored in a cool & dry place. Add bay leaves (about 1 leaf per gallon of rice) to deter flour bugs. I’ve heard that cooked long grain rice will keep for a few days without refrigeration. I’ve never tried it though.

Brown Rice is more nourishing but it won’t keep as long.

There is an in depth treatise called “PRUDENT FOOD STORAGE:  Questions & Answers”  by Alan T. Hagan. A PDF file can be downloaded (about 500KB) from the internet for free at the time of this writing. It is VERY informative. An intertnet search will show several links to the document. Here is but one:

Berkey Water Filters
These use a ceramic filter technology. Hundreds of gallons of water can be filtered before the filter needs replaced. The initial purchase price is not cheap but it appears to be a quality device (I have one on order at the time of this writing).

There are several distributors across the states. Here is but one of them:
877-760-3773

  1. Emergency gear (radios, ammo, etc)

“Freeplay Ranger” Radio
Quad Power Radio. This can be powered by batteries, or its built in solar cell, or its built in hand cranked dynamo, or on house power with the “wall wart”. I bought one about five years ago and it still works great.

It can be purchased at:

Little Green Machines                           Phone: 888-SELFPWR (735-3797)
P.O. Box 56209
Houston,  Texas (77256)

I also have a Kaito Model KA007 that is similar in function to the radio above. The capabilities are similar though this one can pick up TV & short-wave broadcasts under the right conditions. It costs a little less but the quality is also a little less than the radio above.
It can be purchased from:

JHL Supply                                          Phone: 800-537-1339, Ex: 222 or 223
            P.O. Box 720
            Fulton, N.Y. (13069)

At the time of this release, K-Mart has a crank radio/flashlight. I don’t have one so can say no more about it.
